The Bicultural Balance: one of the biggest challenges for adult children of immigrants is the balancing act they must endure in maintaining their family of origin’s culture, traditions, and expectations while adapting to a community that often is demanding them to fit in by adopting a different set of norms and behaviors.
I know this first hand; I was born in Iran and moved to the United States in 1979 at the age of 5 years old. The Iranian community is a very tight knit community that pays a great deal of attention to the importance of family connection where as the American culture strives for independence from their family of origin. Growing up I found these values to be in conflict with one another which led my interest in family therapy. Through my education both academic and personal, I realized that our cultural background has a great deal to do with how we understand and cope with our world.
Through my training and personal experience I will help you identify the reasons behind your feelings and empathically assist you in creating the balance that you need to understand ways to meld your two world.
